Today, in a letter addressed to the students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Dr. Jafar Iqbal informed of his resignation from the university as a dean and professor. The decision has struck us a major surprise, the professor is lauded as one of the frontiers in championing creative thinking within Bangladesh student. A gem of the nation and a personality too charming and sincere, the country, especially the region of Sylhet, simply cannot lose him.

Dr. Iqbal is one of the very few who knows how to deal with blind left and right forces of Bangladesh. His decision to resign seems like he dealt this once again. In his statement, he has cited personal reasons being the catalyst. However, he hints at something more. The country knows he is NOT a person to quit just because personal reasons. Later in the letter, he clearly indicates refusal to hold university admission tests of SUST and Jessore University concurrently is another reason behind his decision. The problem arose when it became a matter of axiom. Some people, and least necessary to say, politically motivated, does not want to make it happen. There is a lot of tension in the country that is created by corrupt people ahead of the election polls and this can be brought as a particularly good example. Only this time, they have started to attack our education system.

This is not about the people have Sylhet, as a portion is blaming the locals for this to happen. You can’t turn on the locals, blaming or abandoning them will not do any good. It is the subset which consists locals and also people/network from outside. We face a great challenge today- to convince Dr. Iqbal to stay.

I am sure if Sir is convinced that students need him he would stay, and he knows it. The decision is forced by Education minister himself. The Education Minister, should have very good reasons for exacting this crisis, a really good one, at least to himself.
